The more basic way to do it is by adding smart plugs, which are WiFi-enabled devices that plug directly into an outlet, and then you plug the device you want to control into the plug. Assign each device a unique name in your home automation app, and you can control it by that name with your digital assistant.

Have lights controlled by a switch? You can swap out that switch for a new one that also communicates via WiFi. It gives you the same level of control, with more advanced switches having dimmer controls. You can even control the lights by saying what percentage of brightness you want the lights to be.

If you have lights that are connected to wiring that is too old to install a smart switch, you can replace the bulb with a smart bulb. These bulbs typically connect to a home automation hub and allow you the same level of control. The only difference is that you must leave the light switch turned on and control it all with your digital assistant. 

Smart Locks 

Another upgrade that is easy to do on your own is to add smart locks. This involves replacing your existing lockset with a new one, which should only require a screwdriver to get the job done. Once the smart locks are installed, you can control them with your digital assistant to lock all doors with a voice command. You can combine this with a custom command as well that can lock the door and turn off the lights as you go to bed. This can add a lot of convenience to your routine at the end of the day.
